'Chemicals have a significant impact on soil and water quality'

A GRAPE A DAY...

Numerous studies talk about the positive health benefits of both red and white wine.  Interesting scientific terms such as flavonoids or resveratrol act as antioxidants and apparently are very good for us.  Scientist believe resveratrol is a key ingredient in preventing damage to blood vessels, reducing bad cholesterol and preventing blood clots forming.

Alcohol content in wine and natural occurring plant compounds (phytochemicals) can reduce the risk of heart disease, certain cancers and slow the progression of neurological degenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.

Is red wine better than white wine?
There is more resveratrol in red wine as the skin is kept on longer during the winemaking process.  The skin is removed before fermentation for white wines, resulting in a lower concentration of resveratrol.  Climates also play a part: wines produced from cooler regions contain more resveratrol.

What’s a safe daily consumption?
Men: two drinks per day.
Women: one drink per day.

Should I drink organic wine?
In short, yes! In traditional winemaking, grapes can be subject to up to 16 different chemicals and pesticides, making them one of the most sprayed crops.  It amazes us how there is a huge worldwide demand for organic food, yet there is not the same relative demand for organic wine.

Turanga Creek winery has always been avid supporters of healthy wine and healthy wine processes.  We have recently been certified organic by BioGro and are en-route to becoming biodynamic.
