News from the vineyard
With this very challenging first certified vintage finally over we were all looking forward to our harvest celebration. We have had more than 3 times the normal rainfall and much higher humidity in the three months prior to harvest. Hand picking was slow on blocks with the tight bunched varieties – sour rot sneaking in. The end result being a loss of 20-30%.
Though we faired better than some who have unfortunately lost everything the wine will be made under organic practices from now on!
We are at the moment trying to pull in the nets, dodging the rain! In between this the bio-dynamic preps have been put on the land and we’ve had fun collecting for and building compost heaps.
At our harvest celebration we had the opportunity to taste the wines from 2009 (reds) 2010 (whites) vintages. They will soon released under a revised label. This should coincide with the opening of our new Organic Winebar. To date these are probably the best wines we have produced!
We were entertained at the harvest dinner by our wwoofers, - speeches which had us all laughing and one even played the didgeridoo. Lamb on the spit provided by our good friend Frank Urgert was enjoyed and maybe a little too much wine also...!
